Thomas was born in the desert of Western Australia sometime in the 1960s. He and his family lived a traditional nomadic way of life on the western side of Lake Mackay. Thomas Tjapaltjarri was a member of the well-known group of nine Pintupi people to come in from the Gibson Desert of Western Australia in 1984, before this time they had never come into contact with European society.
